The American Association of University
Women held its first meeting in 1881.
Since then, AAUW has been a catalyst for change.
Today, with a membership of 100,000
individuals in 1,200 branches nationwide and nearly 2,300 members in Minnesota,
AAUW members contribute to a more promising future and provide a powerful voice
for women and girls.
MAKING
A DIFFERENCE
AAUW us supported by member dues,
affinity programs and other non-dues revenue programs as well as individuals
committed to its work in order to provide the following opportunities and support:

AAUW Educational Foundation (National Level) – awarded over
$4 million in grants and fellowships to more than 250 extraordinary women for a
recent year!
·
AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF)) (National Level) – provides
funding and a support system for women challenging sex discrimination in higher
education and workplaces.
·
Itasca Community College (ICC) Scholarships (Local Level) –
awarded annually to a non-traditional female student who is continuing her
education at ICC.
·
Grand Rapids Branch AAUW Anniversary Scholarship (Local Level) – to be awarded annually
beginning spring 2010 to a non-traditional female student to complete a
four-year degree.

AAUW HISTORY
A
GRAND TRADITION
The Grand Rapids Branch of the
AAUW started in 1949. We are an active
branch with about 100 local members. Our
purpose is to unite graduates of educational institutions in order to promote
equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth and the development of
opportunities for women and girls.
In principle and practice, AAUW
values and seeks a diverse membership.
It is open to any individual who:

has an associate degree or equivalent
·
has a graduate or post graduate degree
·
Is an undergraduate student enrolled in two or four year
institution, or
·
supports the mission of the organization
There are no barriers in full
participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age,
sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.
AAUW’S INVITATION TO YOU!
We invite you to join AAUW to expand
our local and national voice and ensure the education and equity that women
deserve. Through membership, you will:

influence local officials, state legislators, and members of
Congress

MEETINGS
You
are invited to attend an AAUW meeting at any time during the year to meet other
members and learn more about joining.
Meetings take place the third Monday of each month (September through
May) at the United Methodist Church, 1701 SE 5th Avenue,
Grand
Rapids, MN, unless otherwise announced.
The meeting agenda includes a social, a dinner, a meeting and an
educational speaker.
NOTE: Guests are welcome to attend our programs after dinner at 6:45 p.m.
SUMMER
GATHERINGS
During
the summer months (June through August), gatherings with educational speakers
are held at members’ homes. Locations
and topics will be provided in the June issue of the AAUW newsletter, Grand
Rapids Timberline.
ACTIVITIES
Even
if you are unable to attend meetings on a regular basis, there are many ways to
connect with local members. Some of the
activities in which our members participate include:

EDUCATED WOMEN
With
approximately 100,000 members, 1,200 branches, and over 500 college and
university members, AAUW uses its powerful voice on critical issues affecting
women and girls. Share in the community
to speak out on vital social, economic, family and community issues, civil
rights, affirmative action, reproductive choice, sex discrimination, Title IX,
health care, and hate crimes.
Join
with other women in networking developing leadership skills, and building
friendships. AAUW offers a respite from
work, a different perspective, and opportunities for personal and professional
growth. Members devote as much time as
they choose to AAUW activities.
Please
allow four to six weeks for receipt of your AAUW new member packet. Contributions or gifts to AAUW are not tax
deductible as charitable contributions for income tax purposes. Dues payments may be tax deductible as
ordinary and necessary business expenses.
