Aaron J. Brown is an author, historian and instructor at Minnesota North College in Hibbing. He is a columnist for the Minnesota Star Tribune, Minnesota Reformer and Mesabi Tribute. He's almost finished with a new book, "Power in the Wilderness", due out next year from the University of Minnesota Press. Brown shares his work at MinnesotBrown.com. He lives in Balsam Township with his family.

Hello Friends!
October is such a great time to get out and enjoy all the changes that are happening!
The meeting on September 16, started with Vicki Holmstrom distributing the Yearbook and Directory for 2024 to 2025. Many thanks were given to Vicki for all the time she spent updating information.
The Northland Gathering is in Ely on October 12, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. Forms for registration are available.
Our Book Club meets the first Monday of each month. You're invited to attend in October as we are reading, THE WOMEN, by Kristen Hannah.'Frankie is 20 years old and decides to enlist in the Armed forces. We meet at Majestic Pines. Please contact Nancy Salmi with any questions.
The program on September 16 was presented by Mary Shideler and Nancy Raymond. They traveled to Antarctica at different times, and shared stories and pictures.
Remember that the meeting in October is our Book Sale.
Also, the October meeting is when you can bring a qualified guest for dinner and the cost is $7.00. The program will be about Northern Minnesota History.

Thank you, Members! Travel Treasures brought in $95 for our Scholarship Fund.
* Norma Eppinga donated chocolates from Hugo and a book, THE WOMAN, by Kristin Hannah.
* From Cathy Davies' travels to Mongolia, she donated a purse and a beautiful beaded bracelet.
* Anita Firman went to a cooking school in New Orleans and made three batches of Pralines for three lucky members
* From Kazakhstan, Julie Skallman brought beautiful earrings from a mosque and from Newfoundland a homemade dish rag.
* Marlys Mestemacher's brother lives in Japan and he donated a variety of Japanese teas.
At our meeting in October, we will have Travel Treasures and our BOOK FAIR! BOOK FAIR!! BOOK FAIR!!!

The six Northland branches, which consist of
Brainerd, Duluth, Ely, Grand Rapids, and Virginia,
meet each fall. We will carpool to Ely.

***WALKING & TALKING
The group is on its fall/winter schedule of walking on Tuesday afternoons at 1 PM. The locations change from week to week but are generally in the Grand Rapids area. We walk for about one hour and then may gather for coffee. We are hardy women and always walk outside, but we are not Speed Walker so you can set your own pace. Group members receive a notification of the location of the walk. Members what when they no need for RSVPs. If the walk is canceled for any reason (potential weather threat) you will be notified. AAUW Grand Rapids, MN Branch General Meeting Minutes
September 16, 2024
The Grand Rapids branch of AAUW met at the United Methodist Church on Monday, September 16, 2024, for social hour, dinner and program. There were 39 attendees including 3 guests.
President Susan LaVelle opened the business meeting with the reading of the AAUW Mission Statement.
2024–2025 Yearbook and Directories were handed out. Susan thanked Vicki Holmstrom for her work on this project.
Susan has registration forms for the AAUW Northland Gathering which will be held on October 12 in Ely. Registrations are due by October 1. Carpooling will be arranged and Susan can be one of the drivers. Our branch will be hosting this meeting next fall, so it is a good chance to see what the meeting involves.
Our book club will be discussing THE WOMEN, by Kristen Hannah, at their October 7th meeting. Those who have read the book highly recommended it. All members are invited to attend this meeting. If you would like to attend, please contact Nancy Salmi to let her know that you will be coming.
Please note that October is our 'Bring a Friend' month. If you bring a first time, qualified guest, the cost of the guest's meal will be $7.00. October also is our used Book Fair Scholarship Fundraiser.
Travel Treasures brought in $95 for the Scholarship Fund.
Susan LaVelle introduced the speakers for the evening's program. Nancy Raymond, (AAUW member) and Mary Shideler (The Kayak Lady) gave a very interesting talk (including beautiful photos) about their respective trips to Antarctica.
