Volume 39, Issue 8           Summer 2015

FROM THE PRESIDENT – Welcome Summer!

Sitting here writing my Summer 2015 newsletter column, I am reminded that on June 4, 1919 Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote. The new law was then sent to the states to be ratified, so women didn't actually get to vote in an election until 1920.  When we consider how short our voting history is, we still need to be vigilant in our support of the issues and mission of AAUW.

Our May 18th meeting at Ruttger's was very interesting and fun. We saw a lot of vintage clothing and clothing that held very meaningful memories for its owner.  What can I say about Marilyn Rossman's "outfit"? Her goal was to wear everything made in the USA.

Our AAUW Branch continues to offer programs throughout the summer. The program committee has meetings planned for our usual third Monday of June, July and August.  Complete information is in this newsletter.

Please remember to vote in the National AAUW election. Voting ends June 19th. Just go to www.AAUW.org and follow the directions.

Sharon Quern hosted a wonderful opportunity on May 19th, for our newer members to meet each other and gain information about our organization. Thank you, Sharon! See page 4 for her recipe for caramel rolls served at this gathering.

The board WILL meet on June 22, 3:00 p.m. at Grand Rapids State Bank. This is an important meeting as we will begin getting information ready for Lynette Eck to start preparing our member directory booklet to be ready for our September meeting. We will also make a decision on a new caterer.

We will provide a lunch to a volunteer group for Habitat for Humanity sometime in July. You will receive a request for this later. Please be willing to help. Have a great summer and please keep this newsletter as the next one won't be out until September.

Marj Lavalier

QUOTABLE

“Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a NEW pie.”

SUMMER 2015 PROGRAMS

Summer AAUW programs are informal.  The Grand Rapids Branch seems to be the only Minnesota branch to have summer meetings.  Visitors are always welcome.  We collect a donation - usually $3.00 - to cover the refreshments.  This summer our programs will be in afternoons. It’s important to call or email your intention to attend so we can plan the food and chair numbers, etc., by the Saturday before the 3rd Monday of the month meeting.

We will post information about our summer meetings on our blog:  http//grandrapidsaauw.blogspot.com/

Mon., June 15 at Grand Rapids YMCA in the smaller meeting room. We will have the opportunity to tour the newly renovated Y building and learn about the services and programs of the Y. We also will use the last part of the meeting time to discuss program ideas for the coming 2015-2106 year. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.  A $2 donation is requested.

Beverages will be supplied.

GRAND RAPIDS LIBRARY NEWS

From Marcia Anderson, Library Director and AAUW member

Stop by the Library to see all of the 6x6 canvasses from artists of all ages using all media.  The variety is amazing!  The canvases have been constructed into a mosaic to be exhibited at the Library from June 5 until August 7.

The public is invited to purchase numbers throughout the summer for $25.  On August 7 the exhibit will be deconstructed and the art distributed to those who purchased numbers.  The fun part is not knowing which canvas buyers will receive!  Tickets will be available from Library Foundation Board members and at the Library.
We are still accepting entries for the Mosaic. Details are available on the Library's website, or stop by the reference desk to pick up an entry form and instructions and a canvas.  Get creative!

Annual Used Book Sale
The book sale will be held during Tall Timber Days, July 31, August 1 and 2 at Central Square Mall.  We are looking for volunteers to help during the sale.  If you can spare a few hours Frday, Saturday or Sunday, please let Marcia  Anderson know.  manderson@ci.grand-rapids.mn.us or 326-7643  Thank you for your support!

Don't forget to stop by the Library to pick up a copy of the Minnesota Women's Press magazine, which comes out monthly.
