The convention will be held at Timberlake Lodge. Minnesota AAUW provides the speakers, who are so informative, and it lets one know what AAUW stands for and what we support.

Thank you to all who have volunteered to help so far and if you wish to help with either event or both, please let either cyndy.agle@gmail.com or deannaensley@yahoo.com now.

December Scholarship Fundraiser

In December, our fundraiser for scholarships will have a new theme (last year was dessert).  The donated items theme will be a personal item such as jewelry, a scarf, lotions, a journal, bath products, etc.  Giving you time to plan.

** INTEREST GROUPS **
New interest groups can be started by any member at any time.  They can be all year long, for a month or any amount of time.  The interest group should be somewhat related to our mission.

PUBLIC POLICY
The Public Policy group will meet in August to plan for the 2018-19 meetings.  The date will be announced via email August 1.

Meanwhile, all AAUW members should vote for the changes the national AAUW bylaws by June 9, 2018.  These are important changes requested by the national board of directors.  Of special importance is the vote to eliminate the college degree requirement for AAUW membership.  This has been an issue for many years and has failed to pass.  A change requires a 2/3 vote rather than a majority vote to change the bylaw for membership requirement.  The changes would mean that anyone could belong if they supported the mission of the organization.  To vote and find out more information go to www.aauw.org  You will need your AAUW member number and your VOTER pin number, which was emailed to all members who had not yet voted on May 24 from Kimberly Churches, AAUW CEO, with a direct link to the voting page. For assistance with getting your member number and voter pin, call the AAUW national member helpline: 800-861-8068. Feel free to call Marilyn Rossman with any questions too at 326-6775.

AAUW as an organization does not support individuals or political parties.  However, we do become involved in supporting policies that support our mission. Thus, we keep track of the government work nationally and statewide. The primary election for MN state candidates is August 14, 2018. We should pay attention to the candidates for the US House of Representatives. There are several running for MN District 8 to take the place of Rep. Nolan in the 2018 November elections.  Usually the turnout is small for primaries so each vote really counts.  Our large district goes all the way to the Twin Cities and west of Itasca County to the middle of the state. Big "out-of-state money” will probably be involved again.

WALKING & TALKING
The group is walking Wednesday mornings at 9:00 am through the summer. If you get the group emails and are no longer interested in walking, please contact Karen Karls k.karls@yahoo.com  or 326-2053. Also let Karen know if you want to rejoin the list.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
May 21, 2018, Ruttger’s Sugar Lake Lodge

President Marva Jean Hutchens started the meeting by having each in attendance give a highlight of our lives. Those in attendance included: Marva Jean Hutchens, Lynette Eck, Cyndy Agle, Jean Hoshal, Cheryl Vogel, Marge Lavalier, Nancy Raymond, Karen Karls, Deanna Ensley and Jan Miland.

Marva Jean said that we want to remember the members who have lost their spouses recently. Nancy is donating money to the scholarship fund in memory of members’ spouses and wonders if other members might want to do that also.
Cheryl mailed a check for $750 to ICC for camperships for girls to attend the STEM summer camp.

The following members attended the state AAUW convention in April: Nancy Raymond, Deanna Ensley, Cyndy Agle, Marva Jean Hutchens, Harriet Lucia, Dorothy Church, and Marilyn Rossman.

Grand Rapids branch received a membership award for having at least five new members and for being in the top 10 for giving for scholarships, etc. Deanna and Cyndy have a list and are working on the state convention that will be held in Grand Rapids in April 2019. Deanna put together a great poster and brochures and visitor guides were distributed to attendees at the convention to advertise our place.

The first summer meeting, June 20 will be at MacRostie at 10:30 am. July program is not yet determined. August will be on the 20th at Jan Hill’s for a 4:00 pm potluck.

Jean Hoshal went to the scholarship presentation at ICC for our winner Felicia Reinke, who couldn’t be there. Angela Thomas is our Foundation winner and will speak at our May 21 meeting.

The next finance meeting will be held at Majestic Pines on June 11th at 3 PM. The budget will be presented in June and adopted in October.

Invitations have been sent for the regional get-together to be held here in September.

We have another new member, Sue LaVelle.

Cheryl gave a very detailed and concise budget report based on certain assumptions. Items may be changed as the year progresses. Nancy made a motion with Karen seconding it to transfer $3,000 into the checking account for the state convention. Passed.

The incentive to bring new members will be held in October.

Marj made a motion, seconded by Jean that $1000 be in held in place for NCCWSL. Passed.

Respectfully submitted by Jan Miland, secretary
