Summer Programs
Programs for June, July and
August are informal and guests are encouraged.
We will request a small donation to cover the cost of refreshments as
needed. Meetings are in the afternoon at various sites in the Grand Rapids area.
Monday, June 19, 1 PM
Backstage & Behind the Scenes: A Tour of the Reif Center
You've purchased a ticket, enjoyed a performance, perhaps used the spacious new restrooms. This is your chance to see what goes on behind the scenes. You can see how the facility works for large productions, supports local theater and dance, as well as school musical performances. Scenery storage, fly space, make-up mirrors, dressing rooms, rehearsal studios, sound boards and spot lights. Learn about the coordination involved in making the magic happen.
Katie Benes, Development Director for Reif Center, is organizing our visit. The Grand Rapids Players Summer Theatre Kids Camp is in session so we may get a peek at the development of their shows. After the tour, dessert will be served.
No RSVP needed.
Monday, July 17, 2 PM

If you have not already renewed your AAUW
membership, please do so NOW. Send your

Food
Committee Volunteer Thank You
From Cyndy Agle
A huge thank you to our members for signing up
to chair the monthly food committees and to all of you that volunteered to help
with planning and set up for food each month for the next 12 months! We had 57
members sign up to help. Very impressive! If I missed you and you would like to
help, just email me at cyndy.agle@gmail.com and we will be glad to have you
help one month during our 2017-18 program year.
FUNDRAISERS
Travel Treasures
Travel Treasures
If you come across an item in your summer
travels, keep AAUW in mind. At each meeting, we sell chances to win items that
are donated.
Dessert Auction with a Twist
In December, we will be holding a
"Dessert Auction” with a new twist. Items donated do not have to be
edible. Consider donating dessert coffee, dessert wine, a scarf with a couple
of Hershey's chocolates, a pair of earrings with Dove chocolates, coconut body
wash, fruit, a gift card with a bag of M & M's...the list is endless. Start thinking of creative ideas.
This fundraiser will be held at our holiday
dinner program on Mon., Dec. 4 at the
Eagles. Put this event on your
calendar!
** INTEREST
GROUPS **
Any member may start an interest group to meet
monthly, weekly and for any length of time.
The members determine their own agendas and arrangements for meetings
The meetings are open to all AAUW members and their guests. The member directory has more information
about the current active interest groups. Contact program co-chairs Joanne
Bakken or Marilyn Rossman with questions.
EXPLORING OUR COMMUNITY
Our group met at the airplane hangar in Grand Rapids in May and Janis Johnson showed us her plane and talked about pilot training, certifications and being a female pilot. What an interesting afternoon. Now the 10 of us want to get our pilot's license!

Wed, June 14, 11:00 am
We will learn about the Lady Slipper
growing operation. A friend invited us
to the farm. The Lady Slippers are grown
from seedlings that are lab propagated in a lab. You will be surprised by the
number of different species of Lady Slippers grown there. Itasca Ladyslipper Farm is located at 14958
River Rd, 11 miles SE on River Rd. (across the road from the Grand Rapids
Greenhouses). You can drive to the farm
or meet at 10:30 am at Presbyterian Church to carpool.
Note: All members are welcome to join us
on June 14. No reservations necessary.
Mon, July 24, 3:00 pm
Juliet Jones has invited our group to
her home in July. Nancy Raymond will be talking about her Africa adventures.
Juliet will serve refreshments. Meet at
her home at 454 Trout Lake Rd. (plenty of parking). RSVP to Juliet at kcjones50@yahoo.com
by July 21.
August (date/time TBD)
We are planning a field trip to the
Finnish Heritage Homestead Tour in Embarrass.
We may also go to the Nelimark homestead and museum. It is a tour so we
will set up the time and a notice will be sent out at a later date. Plan on a
full day due to distance and we will stop at a restaurant for lunch.

WALKING & TALKING
Our group is now on summer schedule and meets at 9
AM on Wednesdays. We generally walk in the Grand Rapids area but have taken a
few road trip such as Scenic State Park. We walk for about an hour and then
have refreshments and talk. The group is flexible; come when you can. If you
have summer guests, they are welcome too. We are relaxed walkers; if you want a
vigorous workout, we are probably not your group but there are frequently small
groups walking at different paces. We make plans week to week. If you want to
get to get the information send your email to k.karls@yahoo.com
AAUW Northland Fall Gathering
The annual Fall Gathering of the NE Minnesota AAUW
branches is set for Sat., Sept. 9, 10 AM to 1 PM at Hibbing High School, 800 E
21st St. The cost is $25, which includes lunch. The program includes
a tour of this historic building, built in the early 1920s and featuring cut
glass chandeliers, brass doorknobs and railings
and other beautiful craftsmanship. Following the
tour, Hibbing Branch member Stefanie Carlson will talk about “Hibbing’s
Historic & Colorful Past.”
This is a great opportunity to meet and share with
our AAUW sisters in Brainerd, Duluth, Ely, Hibbing and Virginia. Some of our
members have carpooled to this event in the past. RSVP deadline is Aug. 25. See the invitation
and sign-up form attached to this email (or enclosed with print copy of
newsletter).
AAUW
GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
May 30, 2017 - United Methodist Church
The Grand Rapids
Chapter of AAUW met at the United Methodist Church meeting room at 3:30. Members
present were: Deanna Ensley, Marilyn Rossman, Marj Lavalier, Karen Karls, Jan
Miland, Marva Jean Hutchens, Nancy Raymond, Cheryl Vogel, Cyndy Agle, and
Sharon Quern.
Marva Jean asked
everyone to tell what energizes you. She likes us to get to know a little bit
more about one another.
Cheryl presented a
detailed budget proposal for the new program year. The Finance committee
approved it previously. It was agreed to leave $1,000 in the budget for NCCWSL,
to send a student to a leadership conference in Washington, DC. It was also
agreed to leave $1,000 additional money in a fund for members to attend
conferences and meetings around the state. Members are encouraged to attend
outside events and report back to the local group.
A motion was made
by Karen, seconded by Marj, passed to accept the budget proposal. A motion was made by Karen, seconded by
Deanna, passed to add $2,000 to the non-endowed fund at the Community
Foundation and move $9,315 from “temporary restricted” to “restricted” at ICC
Foundation.
Deanna Ensley, the
new program chair, presented a work in progress line-up of programs for the new
year. The June 19 Branch meeting will be at the Reif Center at 1:00 PM, and the
July meeting will be at the Kiesler Wellness Center at 2:00 PM. The program
committee is working on programs that feature women in business and in
leadership positions.
Cyndy reported that
the Explore the Community group will meet on July 14th at 11:00. In July, the group will meet at Juliet Jones‘
house on the 24th at 3:00 PM. In August, there will be an all-day field trip to
a Finnish homestead near Embarrass.
Cyndy also mentioned that the Northland Get Together on September 9th in Hibbing will have registration information in the newsletter. It will be the Grand Rapids Branch turn to host the event in 2018.
Marilyn and Deanna
reported on the state convention. They are asking our chapter to get a large
display board to take to events. They also said that a way needs to be found to
make our membership more aware of national issues. We need to work on our
mission and need to find ways to attract younger women.
A new member coffee
was held at Sharon’s on Thursday, June 1, 2017.
Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, secretary
