President’s Message
We had quite a year!  In September, we held the regional conference in Grand Rapids at the Kiesler House; each month we had exceptional speakers, successful book sales, a December event to benefit our scholarship fund and we were able to give an additional two $1,000 scholarships this year; to hosting the State Convention in Grand Rapids in April.  Those are quite the achievements and we proved that our Grand Rapids branch could do it all! We are a better organization because of the effort of all our members.  We are also celebrating our 70th birthday this year.

Deanna and I are very proud to work with such a talented group of members.  Each year at the state convention we have a silent auction with the funds going to the AAUW Economic Security Fund, which includes LAF, Start Smart, Work Smart, and other programs designed to ensure economic security for women.  We raised $658.15 from the items and baskets donated by our membership for the garden themed silent auction.  Other than Minneapolis we had the highest amount raised from our basket donations.  An exceptional job!

Congratulations to Shirley Jacobson who is a 50-year member of AAUW Grand Rapids.  She was honored with a certificate, pin and bouquet of flowers.   Shirley is now an Honorary life Member of AAUW.  Congrats Shirley!
The winner of our one-year membership was Marion Barry.  Names were put in the drawing for each member who had paid her dues by the May meeting.

We were presented with a certificate for increase in membership at the convention.   We showed an increase of 5 members.
Check the newsletter for the summer programs.  We hope you can attend several of the very interesting meetings that Juliet Jones has set up.  Did you know that we are the only branch in Minnesota that holds summer meetings?

thank you to Jan Miland for always having the minutes from the board meeting and the monthly meeting in the newsletter so we can all keep current as to what is happening.  Very appreciated!
You have to have adventures at every age...have an extraordinary summer!   See you for our September kick-off meeting.

Cyndy Agle
Co-President

We will end up with many fun and unique items and all for a good cause.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
June 4, 2019, Central Square Mall Conference Room

In attendance included the following: Elaine Thorstenson, Karen Karls, Deanna Ensley, Cyndy Agle, Cheryl Vogel, Marj Lavalier, Jan Miland, Juliet Jones, Helen Ahlbrecht.

The meeting was called to order by Cyndy Agle.  The secretary's April report will be reviewed in August.

The treasurer's report was presented and explained by Cheryl. She said that the finance committee had approved the proposed 2019-2010 Operational budget on June 3, 2019, which was based upon the planning assumptions previously approved by the Board. It was recommended that in December, we should re-visit the discussion of the number of scholarships to be presented for next year.
After a full review of the proposed operational budget, Karen made a motion, seconded by Elaine to approve the budget with the income/ cost per meal at the December meeting be increased. Passed.  The suggestion was made that members who make a reservation but do not attend the monthly meeting should be instructed to send their fee directly to Cheryl (since the Branch is billed for the meal whether or not the member attends).

It was mentioned that in December, we should re-visit the discussion of the number of scholarships to be presented for next year.

Elaine is exploring all options for catering this fall. She will have a meeting soon to go over all the issues. The refreshments for the summer meetings are arranged.
