President’s Message
Hello to the hardy Northlanders who are
enduring this frigid weather and to those of us who have been so wise to escape
this snow and cold!
In the last newsletter, Cyndy addressed some
scholarships details. In December, our Board decided to offer two more
scholarships this upcoming year. We will have a total of four scholarships in 2019, two scholarships offered through GRACF
and two through ICC. We will re-evaluate the four before 2020.
RSVP is “used at the end of a written
invitation to mean that you should let the people who invited you know whether
or not you are coming”. We continue to
have quite large discrepancies in people who RSVP (mostly if they believe they
will be attending). We have few members who are so considerate they will
contact me if they cannot attend. Then after they have called with RSVP “yes”,
they find they cannot come so they call to say they will not come. With
the cost of our meals this year accuracy in attendance is IMPORTANT! Please think about the fact RSVP means “YES,
you will attend” or “NO, you will not attend”.
We have had to raise the cost of lunch in February to $13.00 due to several causes. Hiring a new caterer has proven to be much more
complicated than expected. If I can receive more accurate RSVP’s as I mentioned
above, that will help, but also the caterer has various situations that cost
different amounts. We were very spoiled with our last several caterers as they
were not trying to run a restaurant and cater, nor did they ever have to hire
help. This is essentially the cost of not having to wash our own dishes! All costs above what we collect come out of
the scholarship funds and hence would likely have to be made up in some
fashion.
I am enjoying the role of the Co-President
with Cyndy. We do very well together. We are very pleased and busy with 2019
State Convention planning. We look forward to this spring, our 70th Anniversary,
and the 2019 AAUW State Convention at the Timberlake. It will be a very fun and
enjoyable convention.

TOPIC: Diabetes Management, Prevention &
Lifestyle Factors
PRESENTER: Suzette Childs, RN/Certified
Diabetes Educator, Grand Itasca
Suzette Childs has worked in diabetes education at Grand Itasca
Hospital & Clinic for nine years.
Born in Deer River, she graduated from Grand Rapids High School. She started school at Bemidji State University
(BSU) thinking she’d be a teacher, but life happened. She then married, traveled with her husband,
who was in the military, and raised her children. Eventually, she found herself back in Grand
Rapids with a need to make a plan for her life. At age 33, she returned to
school at ICC as a non-traditional student, getting her CNA. While working at Grand Village she earned her
LPN degree at ICC, and then her 2-year RN degree at Hibbing Community College.
She worked for several years at the nursing home in Bigfork before pursuing her
desire to become a diabetes educator.
She began with training at the International Diabetes Center in
Minneapolis, then got her Bachelors of Science degree from BSU.
Suzette loves her job and is passionate about teaching people about
diabetes, both prevention and helping people with diabetes to manage their
condition. She has had diabetes since
she was 8 years old. She will talk about the importance of healthy lifestyle, factors
and challenges of diabetes, as well as some of the newer treatments and
resources.
New Member Orientation
We will have an orientation and intro to AAUW immediately following
the February lunch meeting. Anyone who has not attended an orientation or is a
newer member, please attend. – Marj Lavalier

NEW MEMBER PROFILE
Susan Hayes of Cohasset, recruited by Deanna Ensley
“I was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised mostly in Iowa. I graduated from St. Joseph Academy (an all-girls Catholic school) in 1964. I graduated from Drake University in Des Moines in 1972 with an English/history double major and enough education hours to get a teaching certificate. Three years in a junior high classroom was enough for me! I quit my job and enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1976 with a master’s degree in library science. My library career was in central Iowa. Over the course of my work life, I worked with children from pre-school through high school as a school library media specialist, working in four different school districts and at least twice as many schools. I also taught continuing education classes to fellow teachers in Iowa history, children’s and young adult literature, and storytelling.

met my husband, Dave, while teaching. We have two sons and two granddaughters,
all living in central Iowa. We “retired” to Cohasset in 1988. Now I read what I
want and do what I want. Retirement continues to be my best gig.”
We will feature more new member introductions
in upcoming newsletters. Marj Lavelier is collecting them on behalf of the
Membership Committee.

Scholarship Update
From Kathleen Spencer
From Kathleen Spencer
As many of you know our Grand Rapids Branch
AAUW Christmas party fundraiser brought an additional $900 to add to our
already robust Scholarship fund. Since then our board met December 10th
and unanimously voted to add one more scholarship to each of the scholarships
we currently fund. The Itasca Community
College (ICC) Scholarship fund offered through ICC will now support two $1,000 scholarships and the AAUW Anniversary Scholarship fund
offered through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF) will also
support two $1,000 scholarships.
Please spread the word of these additional scholarship opportunities!
As noted previously:
Women who are eligible must be a full-time
student, 25 years of age or more, with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Other criteria for eligibility:
- For the ICC Scholarship
the prospective applicant must be working toward an AA degree at ICC with
plans to complete a four-year program.
- For the AAUW Anniversary
Scholarship the applicant must be working toward an AA, bachelor’s or
an advanced degree to be eligible.
Preference is given to a student not eligible
for financial aid.

As a reminder our Grand Rapids Branch AAUW also offers two Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM)
Camperships for girls to attend ICC’s STEM Summer Camp. The STEM Camp
program is designed to stimulate, develop, and nurture a love of math and
science. There are two summer camps: one for middle school students and one for
high school students. Our AAUW branch sponsors two camperships - for one middle
school girl and one high school girl to attend these camps. Next summer, $800
is budgeted for the two scholarships.
AAUW TAX DEDUCTIONS: Treasurer
Cheryl Vogel advised that $56 may be
deducted from the $85 annual dues.
The deduction amount is for the National portion of the dues. The State and Local dues (which are
significantly smaller) cover operational costs and are not specifically
designated for donations.
