PUBLIC POLICY
Next meeting: Thurs., Nov. 9, 4:00 to 5:30pm, KAXE Building Meeting Room.

This group is interested in the information related to public policies of the government with an emphasis on those issues that impact or support our AAUW mission and action priorities.  The group welcomes new members of our AAUW branch and their guests.  All views and ideas are welcome and we try to be accepting of all opinions about the issues we discuss.

CHANGE IS GOOD?! Currently we are interested in how our population’s diversity, disparities and reactions relate to our current social, economic and political needs.  We concentrate on issues related to girls and women.  We are reading All The Single Ladies by Rebecca Traister as a beginning for our discussions; chapters 1 to 4 will be the subject of the November meeting.  Chapters 5/6/7 are for January, and 8/9/10 For February. Members are urged to bring other current information to the  meetings.  (Reading this book is not required for attending and you can choose another book or other sources of information.)

In November, we will talk about the changes in our community and Minnesota and the issues in the legislature related to them.  Members are urged to bring any form of information about our subject - newspaper, magazine, items on the internet, or other materials.

At our October meeting, a young woman who had a life of chaos as a child and young adult talked to our group.  She is now working to be a good citizen and an asset to the community. This talk was in connection to the local emphasis on those who have made mistakes in the past and want to be a good citizen.  It was an education for all of us who listened to her and really appreciate her willingness to talk about her troubled past.

There will be no December meeting. The group will meet on January 11, 2018.    Call Marilyn Rossman, 326-6775, or Jean Halverson, email jehhmh@gmail.com

WALKING & TALKING
Group is flexible and open to all members. The social contact is important and the pace varies; if you are looking for speed-walking and a serious workout, this is not your group. Currently we meet on Tuesdays at 1 PM.

We walk for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and then have coffee. As the weather cools the day and time will switch to Tuesday afternoons at 1 PM.  Switch is decided by the group. We walk in the Grand Rapids area on trails and neighborhood streets. Location changes from week to week as chosen by the group. Group is notified by email of next location. To join the group, call or email Cyndy Agle, cyndy.agle@gmail.com or 360-9743. Karen Karls will resume as the contact in 2018 after recovering from surgery.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
October 23, 2017 United Methodist Church

Members present:  Marva Jean Hutchins, Jean Hoshal, Jan Miland, Marj Lavalier and Nancy Raymond

Marj made a motion, seconded by Nancy to charge $18 for the December meal at the Eagles.  Passed.

A discussion was held about plans for our hosting the September 2018 northern regional AAUW get together. Nancy has been checking sites.  Marj has talked to Lila Crowe about being one of the speakers on the Grace painting. Other ideas were to have tours later in the day or possible promote guests coming Friday night for the Ghost Tour. Also sales are great on 38 happens on the weekend of September 15th. More planning with more volunteer committee members is needed for things like food, flyers, decorations, speakers, tours and favors such as a postcard of the picture, Grace. Marva Jean said she would check on the Keisler House as a possible site.

The next board meeting will be November 20, 2017.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary
