Convention Follow-Up and Thank You
Thank you for helping  host the convention in Grand Rapids with 29 branches around the state for the 2 day convention at Timberlake on April 26 and 27, 2019.
The convention had not been held in Grand Rapids since 1982.

We had so many wonderful convention teammates from our Grand Rapids branch helping:
Karen Karls, Marj Lavalier, Elaine Thorstenson, Jan Miland, Cheryl Vogel, Nancy Raymond, Colleen Nardone, Marva Jean Hutchens, Myrna Peterson, Juliet Jones,  Jean Hoshal, Vicki Holstrom, Karen Lonson, Marilyn Rossman, Arlene Wheaton, Jan Hill, Brenda Ruud, Jeanne Walthour, Marion Barry, Louise Koglin Fidelty, Mac Custer, Gayle Coyer, Pat Anderson, Kathy Pliska, Janis Johnson, Marlys Mestemacher, Norma Eppinga, Marion Barry, Helen Alhbrecht, Kathy Spencer,  Barb Richer,Judy MacAlpine, Lynn Moratzka,  Lily Winter,Susan LaVelle, Betty Brandt, Jan Bilden  (and hope I did not miss anyone)
Thank you so much and we could not have done it without you!

Thank you so much to members contributing to the silent auction:
Jan Hill, Lily Winter,  Brenda Ruud, Cathy Davies, Juliet Jones, Nancy Raymond, Jeanne Walthour,  Marj Lavalier, Janis Johnson, Betty Brandt, Anita Firman.....sorry if I missed anyone!

Member Cathy Davies was one of the Workshop Presenters talking about and showing pictures from her motorcycle trip around the world.   After the presentation I heard so many comments from  "going through the mud, her tenacity, the determination and I am in awe."    My favorite picture were the goats in the trees eating fruit!

Just read through the convention evaluations and one comment was: "Grand Rapids--don't wait so long to host another state convention -it was great."

Testimonials from our members on the state convention....We hope
this will inspire many of you to attend the state convention in 2020.
When we have a location and date I will pass along the information.
This shows what a great convention that our Grand Rapids branch put
on.The best comments are "I am so proud of our Grand Rapids branch!"
We all are!!

Our member, Marilyn Rossman, has been a member for 61 years and what a positive testimonial for the state convention held here.   We can be very proud of our Grand Rapids branch! "The Convention was great .  It really reflected careful planning and cooperation by all the members who helped in any way. I am so proud of your work.  I have been to at least  46 conventions in my 61 years  AAUW of membership and  this was one of the best.  I thought  that the speakers were among the very best.   Marva Jean's timer’s ending of the Z’s speech connection with the Friday speech by Kathy Annette. was just perfect for the occasion.  I too want to know how  Dr Z ’s case  turns out.    Brave woman! the Z.    Big Thanks to all the members who helped and attended."
  Mailyn Rossman

Not that my two cents are needed - I agree with everyone's comments.  But as a dual member of Mpls and GR chapters, and as a first time attendee at a state convention, I could not be prouder of my Grand Rapids group and I was so glad I came!  Well done - I sure like your "can do" attitude!
Alice

Thanks to Cyndy, Deanna and everyone who helped “our” convention go so wonderfully.  Since she has been to  46 of these events, Marilyn’s words of praise seem especially cogent.  Kudos to all!  Pat Anderson (I have vague memories of helping in 1982 when the event was last here.)

This was my 1st AAUW convention so I can't compare.  You GR Ladies had everything so well organized.  Environment seemed very welcoming.  I'm pleased I could be a part of this positive event.
Cathy Davies

Kudos from me too.  I’m in Rogers for a granddaughters play but I’m tired.  And....I’m not Cyndy and Deanna who did all the work.  The best part were the two great speakers.
Nancy Raymond

I agree Cindy and Deanne and rest did a wonderful job with convention. It was all so Informative and exciting.  Thanks again to all who worked so hard.  Barb Ricker

I agree as well! Deanna and Cyndy did a wonderful job. Their attention to detail did not go unnoticed. All members as well as Timberlake truly made this a wonderful event. I am happy and proud to be a member of the AAUW - Grand Rapids Branch! Kathleen

Yes, a proud moment for the chapter and Grand Rapids. Well done even to the little things like the MN women’s nature logo on all the little things.  Class act!
Jeanne

KUDOS TO EVERYONE! WHAT A GREAT BUNCH OF WOMEN WE HAVE IN GRAND RAPIDS, WHO ALWAYS STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND GO ABOVE AND BEYOND!!
CHEERS!!  AAUW FRIENDS
JULIET

I agree, Juliet!  Well done GR AAUW!! Much thanks to you, Cyndy and Deanna, for leading us AND all who made the event a success! It would be interesting, and maybe we can help in some way(s)--??, if we could keep a connection with Z (Dr. Zoe Spencer).  A compelling story and one to share with the GR Chapter members who could not be in attendance for the Convention.I learned, had fun and was proud to be a part of it!     Louise

We were very pleased to hold the state convention in Grand Rapids on April 26-27.   We had 146 in attendance from the 29 branches around the state.  We had such positive comments from the visiting members ranging from the professionalism of the Grand Rapids members to the dynamic local speakers.   We heard many comments "I will come back and visit Grand Rapids again."

Thank you to Louise Koglin Fideldy for writing an article on Dr. Zoe Spencer, who was the MN AAUW State Convention keynote speaker.  If you did not attend, you will be able to follow Dr. Z's story ... to be continued in her quest for equal pay. Thanks also to Gayle Coyer for her article on the Work Smart workshop on helping women negotiate higher pay.

We had a number of members who contributed to the Garden-themed silent auction at the convention. The items brought in $651, which will be credited to our branch.  Compliments to our members for a great job!

The summer programs are listed in the newsletter.  Thank you to Juliet Jones for setting up such unique and interesting programs.

***********CONVENTION PRESENTATIONS***********

Keynote from AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund RecipientBy Louise Koglin Fideldy

On Sat., April 27, Dr. Zoe Spencer, Ph. D., a professor of Sociology at Virginia State University (VSU) and an AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund plaintiff, shared her story with 2019 AAUW Conference attendees in Grand Rapids.

“Z” or “Dr. Z” as she is affectionately known is black, is a woman and is from Barry Farms Projects in Washington, D.C.  It is this intersection of race, gender and class that spurred Dr. Z to sue VSU alleging wage discrimination and retaliation.

Dr. Z received her Ph.D., M.S.W., and B.A. from Howard University and achieved the rank of Professor of Sociology at VSU, a historically black college university (HBCU).  She is well-published, highly sought after for lectures and presentations and has consulted on diversity and inclusion for businesses and institutes.

While Dr. Z thought teaching at an HBCU would protect her from inequities, she said she was wrong.

At VSU, Dr. Z was charged with identifying deficits in gender equity, but when she did, she met with resistance.  “The moment I challenged the gender inequity inside those walls, my black male administrators showed me without question that patriarchy and sexism are not exclusive to white males and white institutions. The more I fought to change the system, the more the administration fought to sustain it,” says Dr. Z in an August 2018 blog post.

In 2014, two male administrators were appointed to faculty positions as associate professors.  Spencer alleges their salaries were vastly higher than those of female professors at all ranks and $35,000 – 49,500 higher than her salary.  She requested a salary adjustment that was denied and alleged subsequent retaliation including delays in her pay.

So began protracted litigation. In April 2017 at the U.S. District Court of Virginia, Dr. Z survived a motion to dismiss brought by VSU.  In October 2017, VSU filed a motion for summary judgement and the Court agreed and dismissed her case.  In April 2018, she filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals…which she recently learned she lost.

However, she is not stopping.  She says, “The details of my litigation struggle would fill a book. Learn more about Zoe Spencer’s AAUW-supported case. What I will say here is that every woman who takes on an institution in the fight for gender equity faces a David and Goliath battle. I am David; I entered the fight with nothing. The institution knew that their resources would far exceed mine. The fight is designed to break us. They thought they would break me. They were wrong.  What my institution didn’t realize was that my life struggle prepared me for this. It made me stronger. More importantly, my struggle has shown me that help and support always show up to give us strength to follow through. AAUW is a testament to that.”

AAUW’s Work Smart training helps women earn more money
By Gayle Coyer

Most of us are aware that women only earn on average 82 cents to every dollar earned by a man.  A part of AAUW’s mission is to fight this pay gap. One of the strategies being used is to help women increase their own pay by learning salary negation skills, both when starting a new job and when working for a salary promotion. AAUW has developed a program called Work Smart (Start Smart for college-aged women) and they aim to train 10 million women around the country through a Work Start or Start Smart course by 2022. The course is being offered both at workshops and through a one-hour online course at www.salary.aauw.org .

The Work Smart course was offered at the recent State AAUW convention (hosted by the Grand Rapids branch!) and I was able to take the course. One of the things I learned was that men commonly negotiate for salary and women have generally not negotiated for salary. The course gives four steps to better salaries and with each step, we practiced and role-played various situations.

  • Step 1 is to know your value by putting together a strong resume.
  • Step 2 is to know your target salary and benefits for the position you are applying for. You can research by using websites like www.salary.comto find out salary ranges.
  • Step 3 teaches you tactics to negotiate. It walks you through common salary discussion conversations during an interview or performance review and how to respond to them.
  • Step 4 is practice, practice, practice. This is where serious role-playing can really make a difference.

The Work Smart program and course is a great program to share with other groups that you are involved with. It’s also a good program to share with other women in your life, whether they are family, neighbors, or friends. Help spread the word that taking this course could help women make more money.

************2019 AAUW National Election***********

If you have not voted in the national AAUW election, please do so by the May 14, 6 PM Eastern Time deadline. Every voice matters, so please take a few moments to vote in this important election. Your vote will determine the leaders of AAUW’s Board of Directors who will guide AAUW as we seek to achieve equity for women and girls. This year, you’ll also vote on AAUW’s 2019–21 Public Policy Priorities, providing the framework for the important advocacy work we do at the local, state and national levels.

If you need help with the voting process, call the national office of AAUW at 202-785-7700 or email connect@aauw.org  You can find your 7-digit membership number in our blue AAUW member directory.
