President’s Message

After living in SW Florida for 30 years, it is so nice to be guaranteed a white Christmas. Decorating our palm trees with lights was not quite the same. One plus was that I could plant my poinsettias in the yard after Christmas, and the following November they would start turning red and by early Dec. they were a gorgeous red. They would grow into a bush and come back year after year.

This month marks AAUW's 140th birthday. The organization is celebrating 140 years of progress together.

In the newsletter there is information on Hibbing's annual book sale.   They have approximately 80,000 books. That is an ambitious project for their fundraiser.

On Dec. 13, we will have our Christmas Party "Silent Auction with a Twist."  Each year we change the theme and this year it is "Warm & Cozy." I am always amazed at the unique and creative items that our members come up with. We started this in 2014 and it has been our biggest fundraiser for our scholarship fund. Dress festively!

Wishing you a sparkling holiday season!

Cyndy Agle, Co-President

MEMBERSHIP NEWS
By Marj Lavalier, Membership Chair

Greetings members! Welcome to the 2021 holiday season. We will be able to be with family and friends a little more this season than last. We will have our AAUW Christmas fundraiser with its Warm and Cozy" theme.

Remember, you are welcome to invite friends who might like to support our cause and give to the scholarship fundraiser AND get some pretty wonderful items in return for their participation. If you have a friend who is interested in becoming a member, now is a great time to join and get to know us. The dues for a half year after Dec. 1 are $54, which pays for membership until June 30, 2022.

Here is a thought to consider during this holiday season as we remember friends and loved ones. "To know someone is to know the song in their heart and when their memory fails, to sing it to them," by Esra Earl Jones.

Have a Blessed Christmas and Hanukkah and a Happy New Year!

Meet a MEMBER

Linda S. Johnson
First-year member of AAUW

AAUW:  I am a new member who joined in September of this year. I have attended several Exploring our Community field trips and joined the winter walking group (the summer date/time does not work for me since I play bridge with friends every Wednesday morning). I am a strong advocate for women equality in the workplace, having seen and experienced discrimination during my career.

Growing up: My family sold their farm in Meadowlands, MN and moved to Grand Rapids when I was in 3rd grade.  I am the oldest of three girls. I had an older brother who died of leukemia when he was 6 and I was 4. My mother was a Registered Nurse at Itasca Memorial Hospital for 25 years.  My father was legally blind and had several different jobs.

Career: After graduating from Greenway High School in 1968, I completed a 2 year computer programming degree from Hibbing Technical College. January, 1971 I started my career at Itasca County.  For the first 9 months I was the payroll clerk in the Engineer Department.  I then moved to the Treasurer’s Department and wrote the first computer programs to calculate the real estate taxes and print the County tax statements.  The Itasca County Information Systems Department was created.  We started by buying computer time from Blandin Paper Company.  The County-wide property tax file and computer programs were punched on cards at the courthouse and physically brought to Blandin for processing.  Over 35 years as technology improved and became cheaper, I moved the County to in-house online systems connecting multiple locations via fiber and then to providing information and services to the public via the internet.

I was instrumental in creating Minnesota Counties Information Systems (MCIS), a joint powers of Minnesota counties that share programming development cost.  Their office is currently located on the Airport Road.

I served on the School District 318 Community Task Force Technology Committee to help bring computers into the classrooms. I served on the Northeastern Minnesota Telecommunity Advisory Board to help create and expand regional telecommunication systems for voice, data and video. I served on the Government Information Systems Management Organization (GISMO), which was an organization of state, county and school Information Systems Managers whose purpose was to educate members on new technologies and sharing information.

Personal: I am married to David L Johnson, and we live on the Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Coleraine. I have two married children, a son and daughter from my first marriage to Patrick Taylor.  Dave has one unmarried son. We have six grandchildren ages 6-14. I enjoy golfing, gardening, reading, hiking, boating, kayaking, traveling and spending time with family and friends. A few memorable travel experiences include riding a donkey down 600 stairs in Santorini, Greece; losing my purse in Syndney, Australia; touring England, Ireland and Holland in a van with five other women; the beauty of Croatia; and seeing the wildlife of the Galapagos.

President’s Message

We had an exceptional program on Owls for our October meeting.  We learned about the 12 owls living in Minnesota, heard their calls and even what they eat--including skunk. Our speaker was Owl Expert Eben Spencer, husband of our member Kathy Spencer who co-chairs our Scholarship committee.

A huge thank you to Arlene Wheaton for putting together our 2021-22 membership directory. There is much time and effort that goes into the directory. Arlene also does our monthly newsletter and she works full time. Please let Arlene know how much we appreciate her!

Our special interest groups are busier than ever. Please check the directory to see which groups you would like to become a part of; the contact name and email for the group is also listed.

We welcome our new members! We are so glad you joined us. We have a very active group, and we look forward to getting to know you. Thank you to Margaret Barrick, Karen Karls, Vicki Holmstrom and Sharon Quern for bringing guests to our October meeting, who joined and are now new members.

Our new reservation system is working well. Just click on the link in the newsletter to RSVP. Danielle Witherill is our new reservation contact and she is monitoring the reservation system; when she opens and checks the emails she will send a reply "Got it."

Meet a MEMBER

Vicki Holmstrom
13-year member of AAUW

AAUW: I attended my first AAUW meeting in February of 2008 as a guest of Shirley Jacobson.  I joined AAUW shortly thereafter.  Currently I am the contact person for the Wednesday Literature group.  I am also part of the Historian committee which keeps up a book of photos, newspaper articles and information handed out at our meetings.

I have been so impressed with the opportunities AAUW offers.  The program committee never fails to come up with great ideas for speakers at our meetings.  The interest groups provide members a chance to meet in smaller groups and get to know each other better.

Education: I grew up in Mason City, Iowa.  In high school I loved math but was told about the only thing I could do with a college math degree was teach.  I’m not sure they would have told my male classmates that! Not wanting to be a teacher, I decided on another field that greatly interested me.  As a Candy Striper (anyone remember those!) I got to do some chores in the laboratory. I was hooked and decided early on that I wanted to be a medical technologist. I got my BA in Biology at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.  While there I worked in the research program that my advising professor supervised. The September after I graduated my professor and his family headed to England, where he was on sabbatical doing research at Queen Mary College in London. I was asked to come along and help with both research and family. It was a great experience. After returning, I did my one-year medical technology internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Career:  I spent my entire career at HCMC. I started out on the evening shift where I got to rotate through all the departments of the laboratory. That was a great help in deciding where I wanted to specialize when I was ready for a day job.  After four years, I decided I was ready to give up daytime sailing and skiing opportunities and switch to days.  I spent the rest of my career in the Chemistry department. It was very rewarding to be involved in constantly changing technology. During my career, methods evolved from manual pipetting and measuring changes of the color of a solution in the test tube, to complex instrumentation. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the instrumentation.  Being sent off for training on a new instrument and returning to do setup, instrument evaluation, procedure writing and employee training were my most rewarding duties. I also ended up in charge of the chemistry education program for our annual interns. And found out I enjoyed teaching after all!

Interests: My husband and I have always enjoyed traveling, camping and hiking.  Add to that canoeing, kayaking and sailing.  We have also been very busy with our dogs, competing in obedience, flyball, and agility.  In addition, we have been foster and home visit volunteers for RAGOM, the Twin Cities-based golden retriever rescue organization. We moved to Grand Rapids in 2006, one year after retiring.  In Grand Rapids, I have been a volunteer at Zion Lutheran Church and the Second Harvest Food Shelf.

AAUW Grand Rapids, MN Branch Meeting Minutes

September 20, 2021, United Methodist Church

The Grand Rapids branch met at the United Methodist Church. Forty-one members attended.

Co-president Cyndy Agle opened the session and led participants in the reading of the AAUW Mission Statement.  Marj Lavalier, vice president and membership chair, welcomed two new members and one returning member.

In addition, thanks were given to Karen Karls for another excellent AAUW article submitted to the Herald Review, which helped with member recruitment. Members were reminded that the October meeting will include another book sale. Donated books should be published less than five years ago. Also, members were encouraged to invite a guest for the October meeting. Dinner cost for a first-time qualified guest will be $7.

Deanna Ensley, co-president, discussed RSVP etiquette for meeting reservations, reminding members to respond in advance so an accurate meal count can be provided. Updated member directories will be provided at the October meeting. Six items were donated to travel treasures for September, earning $66.

The evening’s program was on the MacRostie Art Center, presented by Katie Marshall, Executive Director.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Dianne Anderson, Secretary
