Volume 40, Issue 3           November-December 2015

FROM THE PRESIDENTOpportunities to give, support others

Snow flurries in the past week reminded us that winter is not far off. This newsletter will cover both November and December.
I understand Mayor Dale Adams gave an excellent presentation and we had over 50 members in attendance. It would be helpful to the serving committee if someone from each table would help clear the table. This will ensure we clear the tables in a timely manner to get the program started on time. Thank you for helping.
Our November program is “Success for Native American Students”. It should prove to be informative and very important for our community.
In December, we will have our "Gift in a Jar" affair like we did last year. It was an amazing fundraiser. Bring something in a jar or bottle. Use your imagination; have fun with this. See more information on page 3.
I have received a request for volunteers to paint trim at a new Habitat for Humanity house in Deer River. It is a large 6 bedroom home. They are hoping to have the family in by Christmas. The painting day is November 12. If you are interested in helping, please give me a call at 326-2716.
This new letter will have information for November and December programs so please hang on to it so you will have all the information you need to make sure you can enjoy AAUW to the max.  Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
          In your service, President Marj

JAR/BOTTLE Silent Auction with a Twist

Have you filled your bottle or jar for our "Silent Auction with a Twist" to benefit our scholarship fund yet?  How about soup mix, a jar of apples, cookie decorations supplies (mix, sprinkles, etc.), mani-pedicure in a jar (nail polish, files, etc.), a "Toasty" jar (cocoa mix, marshmallows, cozy socks), flowers, a scarf. Or a bottle or special wine, olive oil or vinegar...As you can see, the possibilities are endless.

As we did last year, we will be selling tickets--25 tickets for $20, 12 tickets for $10 or 6 tickets for $5; then you put tickets in bags for the items you would like to win. What a great way to get unique Christmas gifts, hostess gifts or things for yourself.  Be creative! We can't wait to see what is in the bottles/jars! Remember this is for a great cause—scholarships that support the education of women and girls!

SNOWBIRDS:  You can participate too even if you are not here in December.  Simply put an item in a bottle or jar for the scholarship fundraiser and give it to Cyndy Agle, Jean Hoshal or Jan Miland before you leave.

** INTEREST GROUPS **
Any member can start an interest group and recruit members to join.  The subject should have something to do with our mission and/or public policy issues.  We all like to learn and find new interests.  Groups plan for their own meeting time and communications system.  They do not have to meet monthly all year long. They can meet for a month or just in the summer, or for the duration of their stated purpose. If you are interested, please inform President Marj Lavalier or Program co-chairs Joann Bakken or Marilyn Rossman, who can help you get a group organized.

BRIDGE

Do you like to play bridge? Why not join our AAUW monthly bridge group. The group meets at Majestic Pines Bistro at 11:30 AM for lunch, and then plays a few rounds of social bridge. We meet the first Thursday of each month except January, February, March and April.  We encourage any level of bridge player. Contact persons are: Anita Firman, Ann Clark, Pat Anderson, Mary Singsank, Carol Rasmussen, Betty Akre, and Shirley Jacobson.

CREATIVE ART

Open studio for painting is held at the MacRostie every Tuesday, 10 AM through the afternoon. Free for members; nonmembers pay $5. Margaret Z. Morris sends an email to those interested each week, including if this group will not meet some weeks. Bring your lunch. This is open for anyone of any level of painting or any media. We have watercolor and acrylic, and welcome other media.  No cost or instruction, learning from each other and having fun.  Margaret’s email: ipaint@paulbunyan.net or phone 999-9683.

PUBLIC POLICY

This group meets on the second Thursday at the KAXE Radio building meeting room at 4 PM with 3:30 PM catch-up information time.  Invited program speakers begin at 4 PM.  We end at 5:30 PM.  Karen Karls keeps the email list for this group so if you want to be included in notices, please call her at 326-2053 or email K.Karls@yahoo.com Please LET HER KNOW OF YOUR INTEREST. We welcome all members and their guests.

The October meeting featured Victor Moen who is the northern area Minnesota probation director.  This was a very interesting meeting about the Minnesota prison system.  Our group is interested in the policies needed for good government and that relate to our AAUW mission public policy issues. The November 12 meeting will be about medical payments and financial information, especially for those of us in small communities. See Colleen’s note below. Our December 10 meeting is still a work in progress. In January, we plan to learning about issues of inequality and economic disparity. We will be selecting books for common reading themes.

**November 12 Public Policy Meeting**
All AAUW members are invited to the public policy meeting on Nov. 12 for a presentation on demystifying hospital bills and health care funding.  Special guests will be Mike Youso, CEO of Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, and Ed Tusa, CFO.  They will join us at 4:00 pm in the KAXE meeting room.  Please email Marilyn Rossman at mbro@paulbunyan.net if you can attend so there will be room for all. - Colleen Nardone

WALKING & TALKING

The group has switched to our winter schedule of walking on Tuesdays at 1 PM.  The group is flexible and open to interested members. Locations of the walks are chosen by the group and are generally in Grand Rapids neighborhoods during the winter. We schedule week by week and an email is sent with the location. We walk for about one hour and then have coffee. To be included in the group, send your email to Karen Karls at k.karls@yahoo.com

AAUW’s impact is local, statewide, national and global

As an AAUW member, you can be proud that you are part of an organization that is making a difference for women and girls in some pretty impressive ways.

Did you know that AAUW educates lawmakers at the state and national levels about the results of our research and the policies needed to advance our mission? Since our first research report debunked the then-common myth that higher education made women sterile, AAUW has been at the forefront of timely, thought-provoking research. This year we’ll release the definitive report on women in engineering and computing. AAUW is active on college campuses, helping women gain valuable leadership skills they’ll need throughout their lives. AAUW has long had an impact outside the United States, and our coalitions and relationships with international colleges, universities, and organizations are extending this international reach.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BRANCH BOARD MEETING
October 26, 2015, 4:00 PM, Public Utilities Building, Grand Rapids

Attendance: Marj Lavalier, Cyndy Agle, Nancy Raymond, Lynette Eck, Karen Karls, Jean Hoshal, Charmayne Nelson, Jo Ann Bakken, Jan Hill, Sharon Queren, Jan Miland and Cheryl Vogel.
The October 26, 2015 Grand Rapids Chapter AAUW board meeting was called to order by President Marj Lavalier. The secretary’s report was approved. The treasurer’s report shows a balance of $8,995.45. It was reported that $120 was made at the book sale. Sharon said that the two guests at the October meeting have joined our chapter. The November program is about Indian Education. A discussion was held about the December meeting concerning the food, etc. It was decided that the party committee is making the decisions and plans. Cyndy made a suggestion that one person from each table bus the dishes to the kitchen to speed clean-up. Jean reported that the scholarship money we send to the state AAUW organization is used where there is the greatest need, determined by the state board. We need to vote on the amount we want to send in November as it is due in December. Karen, as usual, will contact the program people for November for her informative newspaper article. The public policy meeting is on November 12. Jan Hill is working on hospitality fun for November. Her October witches were a hit. In new business, it was suggested that we need a contact person at ICC. Marj also mentioned that we can be involved in the Sweetwater benefit in the spring. If we wanted to have a table to advertise our chapter, it would cost $250.
Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary
