President’s Message

Hello to our Grand Rapids Members,

This year we are celebrating our Grand Rapids AAUW branch 70th anniversary.  Just think—our Branch was started in 1948!

What a highlight to have Virginia Saxhaug attend our September meeting as she was one of the three Charter members!  That was very much an honor to have her speak about starting the branch and the very strict membership qualifications. We are very grateful to her.

Our Branch received a "Certificate of Honor" for recognition of our 70th Anniversary.  It was signed by Kimberly Churches, AAUW Chief Executive Officer, and Julia Brown, AAUW Board Chair.  We have a copy in our Historian book.

From 2019-2020, the U.S. will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women's constitutional right to vote.  Suffragists began their organized fight in 1848. The proclamation declaring the Susan B. Anthony 19th amendment ratified and part of the US Constitution was done on August 26, 1920.  Minnesota ratified the 19th amendment on September 8, 1919. Today more than 68 million women are able to vote in elections.

October is a busy month! We have our biannual book sale and also the "Bring a qualified first time guest for just $7.00."  This is a great way to increase our membership and let others know what AAUW is about.

We will have sign-up sheets for the "Special Interest" groups, so consider joining a group or another group such a book group, public policy, walking, Bridge or "exploring our community."  We will also pass out AAUW member directories at the October meeting.

We had many compliments on the delicious dinner served by our new caterers.   Thank you to Elaine for finding our new caterers.  Please make a reservation as the caterers need to know how much to prepare; we do not want to run out of food!
Make your reservation now for the October meeting and bring a guest!

We value our members and thank you for continuing to support AAUW.

Cyndy Agle
Co-President

Membership Report
From Marj Lavalier, Membership Chair

We are happy to welcome Susan Lynch, Itasca Community College Foundation Director/Alumni Director, as a member. Our membership stands at 86 now, so we have an increase of two since last newsletter.

I would like to encourage each of you to invite a "first time qualified" guest to our October 21st meeting. The cost for dinner is only $7 for your guest that night and of course, you may bring more than one guest.

NEWER or NEW member orientation: I will host a new member orientation on Nov. 11 at 4:00 pm prior to our regular AAUW monthly meeting at the United Methodist Church. This will help you get to know the larger picture of AAUW.  All board members are invited and encouraged to attend and share their experiences in AAUW.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND FUNDRAISER

We will hold our annual fundraiser to benefit our scholarship fund in Dec. along with our Christmas party on Mon., Dec. 9 at the Eagles.  The theme for the "Fundraiser with a Twist" is SHINY and BRIGHT.

Bring a gift that is "shiny and bright." A few ideas are candles, a shiny gift card,  a flashlight, jewelry, a book light, a scarf wrapped with a shiny bow,  bright socks, Christmas decor, a lantern, Christmas lights, food in a bright and shiny wrapper, a book that has the word 'shiny' or 'bright' in the title.

Tickets will be sold and you can put your ticket in the bag for the gift you wish to bid on...there will be a random drawing for each item.  Ticket prices are: 25 for $20, 12 for $10, 6 for $5 or a dollar each. Every dollar you contribute goes toward our scholarship fund.

** INTEREST GROUPS **
**New! ISSUES & IDEAS - A DIFFERENT KIND OF “BOOK” GROUP
Readings would be from nonfiction books and/or magazines. Currently, there are very interesting new books about our American and world history, books about refugees and population movements, economic viewpoints, and education changes. Some issues of Atlantic Monthly Magazine or Mother Jones Magazine, The Nation, or The National Review can prompt thinking about new ideas.  If you like nonfiction books and are fascinated by the writings about U.S. history that really give an entirely new look at our history, or subjects you never think about, perhaps you should take the time and energy to try it out. Join our group. One book or magazine might occupy several of our meetings.

Talk to Emilie Zasada or Marilyn Rossman at the next AAUW dinner meeting.   Or find us in your new AAUW member directory for phone and email addresses.

Locations are emailed to the group.  We generally walk for about an hour and then have coffee.  We walk outdoors rather than in a mall or gym.  Members walk when they want to and at their own pace; no need to RSVP.  It is a social group rather than a hard-core exercise one. We welcome new members.  If you want to be added to the group, send your email address to k.karls@yahoo.com

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BRANCH MEETING
September 16, 2019, United Methodist Church

Co-president Cyndy Agle welcomed everyone. Treasurer Cheryl Vogel gave a detailed report with a written report for each member and for each table. This report is included in the secretary’s book. She mentioned that there is a 15% reduction in membership for a variety of reasons.

Food chairwoman Elaine Thorstenson reported that the new caterers are appreciated. She stressed that reservations are very important to have enough food provided.

She recognized fellow member, Susan Hayes, as the Itasca Volunteer of the Year and a runner-up at the state fair. Fundraiser Chair Nancy Raymond, announced the many travel treasures. She said there will be a gently used book sale in October. She reported on the regional meeting in Virginia, which was attended by nine Grand Rapids women.

Susan Lynch presented a video, Beyond the Classroom, which is a philanthropy project at ICC, to build the McMahon Student Center.

Jean Hoshal introduced the speaker, Will Richter, Grand Rapids Library Director. He spoke on the topic, “All Roads Lead to the Grand Rapids Area Library”.

Respectfully submitted,
Jan Miland, Secretary
