Social: 5:00-5:45pm  Dinner: 5:45-6:30 PM  Business Meeting: 6:30pm
Program: 7:00pm

TOPIC: How They Brought the Organization Together

PRESENTER: Katie Marshall, MacRostie Art Center

Katie Marshall is the Executive Director of the MacRostie Art Center.  She will give us an overview of MacRostie Art Center's three main programs – Exhibition, Education, and Artist Services – with examples of how each contributes to their mission to inspire a creative community.

In 1966, the Itasca Art Association was incorporated, and in 1997 changed its name to MacRostie Art Center to commemorate the gift of our building by local businesswoman Ruth MacRostie. The organization has been located in the building in downtown Grand Rapids since the 1990s. Providing support, resources, advocacy and recognition for local artists is a big part of their work.

Meals: We are excited to have Peggy Smith and Shirley Nixon back as caterers for another year. The cost of meals for the coming year is $15.00 for dinners and $13.00 for our two lunch meetings in January and February. All no shows will be charged.

Menu: Sweet & Sour Chicken on Rice, green beans, dinner roll and Apple Crisp
Food Chair: Nancy Raymond

President’s Message

What a busy summer after such a quiet summer the year before. It was also a hot and dry summer and there was rarely a day that I did not water.

I can tell that fall is coming as my orioles are really eating the grape jelly to prepare for their long trip south. I hope you all enjoyed many summertime activities.

Our Grand Rapids AAUW group had a very busy summer also with programs and "Exploring our Community" events throughout the summer. We had a total of seven activities! So glad to see so many of you at the events.

Welcome Norma Eppinga who will now be on our AAUW Funds (travel treasures and book sale) with Marlys Mestemacher. A thank you to Nancy Raymond for her many years on the board, including President twice! Welcome to Sue Mattson now on the hospitality committee.

We have an amazing group of members and thank you all for your continued membership and support!

Cyndy Agle, Co-President

Membership seasonal message

From Marj Lavalier, Membership Chair

Fall is always the time, since we were 5 years old, to start something new. It is time to start school for many years and then maybe a new job, or move, or try a new class through community ed. If we pay attention to conversations with friends, they may be looking for something new also. Well, AAUW is the perfect answer. Invite them with you to our meeting on September 20th. It is great to share something you value.

From Grand Forks Herald, Labor Day 1994:

How to make summer last a little longer:

Here it comes…the last day of summer. Not officially of course. The calendar says that Fall won't arrive for weeks. But we all know better. Labor Day is it. The final hurrah. If the weather stays warm after this, we call it a fluke. In fact, by Tuesday people will be talking about snow. That is why Labor Day is so critical. You have one day, 24 measly hours, to cram in as much summer fun as you can.

You would never do these on the last day of winter, whenever that is. So, out of the list of 97 suggestions I have chosen eight for you to try and make memories to last you until the snow melts.

A last fling on the last day of summer!

1. Let the sun shine in your hair, or dry your hair in the sun.

2. Slow down, go slower today.

3. Stay outside until dark.

4. Drink your morning coffee outdoors.

5. Try to figure out what the birds are talking about.

6. Open a window.

7. Wish on a star.

8. Appreciate a sunset that comes after 5:00pm.

I had this stuck on my file cabinet at work for years. Happy Fall!
