Volume 40, Issue 4           January-February 2016

FROM THE PRESIDENTHappy New Year, 2016!

I think the December Jar Auction prompted the most fun discussions all fall. Whenever I ran into a member, we always talked about what we were going to do and what we were going to put it in and hoping this or that would be OK and work. Since the auction, I have heard "Well, next year I will....” which begs the question, shall we do the Jar Auction again?  With about 55 members present, we raised $710 for our scholarships.

Please remember our January and February meetings are at 11:30 a.m. at the Sawmill Inn. Make a reservation with Charmayne, and remember if you make a reservation, you need to pay for it whether you come or not.  So, make a reservation and make every effort to attend.

See details on page 2 about our January 18 lunch meeting with a program on the Reif Center's Education Mission.

I want to let you know that a former member--Mae Howe--passed away on December 27 in Grand Forks. You can sign the guest book and get more information at www.amundsonfuneralhome.com

Our January board meeting is at the Sawmill immediately following the general meeting. We will do this for both January and February board meetings.

Please hang onto this newsletter as this is for January and February; the next newsletter will come out in March.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH OF YOU, AND MAY 2016 HOLD MANY BLESSINGS FOR YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES.
Sincerely, Marj Lavalier

Jar Auction Success: Thank you for donating so many unique and generous gifts for our December bottle/jar event at Majestic Pines. Thank you for the time you put into creating the wonderful gifts.  The creativity in your gifts made it so much fun.    We had 95 gifts and we raised $710 for the scholarship fund.  We have such a great group of AAUW members! – Cyndy Agle

PUBLIC POLICY
The group will meet on Thurs., Jan. 14, 4:00-5:30 PM, at the KAXE meeting room. New members and guests are welcome.  We will spend the next several months learning about the threats and possible demise of the "middle class" in the United States.  The book, American Mojo: Lost And Found: Restoring Our Middle Class by Peter Kierman, was selected as our basic resource. Get the book at the library, bookstore, or online/secondhand from Amazon or Barnes & Noble.  If possible, read the first section of the book.  You also may choose to read a different book about the same subject. The Grand Rapids Public Library will have suggestions for other books on this subject. Questions? Call Jean Halverson or Marilyn Rossman.

Judge John Maturi was our guest speaker at our December meeting.  It was a real treat to listen and learn about the judicial system and the responsibilities of Minnesota judges.  That meeting was part of the effort to have a better understanding of the public issues behind the efforts to improve and reform our judicial system.

WALKING & TALKING
The group’s winter schedule is walking on Tuesdays at 1 PM.  The group is flexible and open to interested members. Locations of the walks are chosen by the group and are generally in Grand Rapids neighborhoods during the winter. We schedule week by week and an email is sent with the location. We walk for about one hour and then have coffee. To be included in the group, send your email to Karen Karls at k.karls@yahoo.com

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
November 23, 2015, 4:00 PM, Public Utilities Bldg.

In attendance: Marilyn Rossman, Lynette Eck Sharon Queren, Cyndy Agle, Marj Lavalier, Jan Miland, Cheryl Vogel, Jan Hill, Karen Karls, Nancy Raymond, Jean Hoshal, Shirley Jacobson.

The November 23, 2015 Grand Rapids Chapter of AAUW board meeting was called to order by President Marj Lavalier.

Motion by Karen, second by Marilyn passed to accept the October minutes.

Cheryl presented the treasurer’s report showing a total asset balance of $8,899.41. She said that the books were audited and found to be accurate. There are 96 paid members. Motion made by Karen, second by Marilyn, amended by Nancy and Jan Hill to send $750 to LAF and $750 to EF. The motion passed and Cheryl will send $1500 by the end of December.

Sharon talked about the chapter blog. It was agreed that the names and info on new members should not be published on the blog because of privacy reasons. There should be no birthdays mentioned.

A discussion was held about having a P.O. box, but it was decided not to for a couple of reasons, such as cost, $60 a year and the job of someone collecting the mail.

Marilyn and Cyndy presented a detailed report of the upcoming December party. They seem to have everything planned very well.

John Maturi will be the speaker at the next public policy meeting.

Lynette made a motion with Cyndy seconding to send a bill for the no shows for the January and February meetings. The cost will be $15 for each of these meetings.

There will be no board meeting in December; the January and February meetings will be held directly after the regular meeting at the Sawmill Inn.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary
