TOPIC: Diversity Issues
Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Olney

Dr. Sylvia Olney will address issues of diversity. She has titled her presentation “Circling the Wagons: Why We Protect Ourselves from Change and What We Do About It”.

She will address some aspects of the biology, culture and psycho-spirituality of our relationship to change in society, especially regarding people different from ourselves.  She will talk about myths that get in the way of living freely and heartily in times of change and suggest ways to broaden the nature of our relationships to ourselves, others and the world at large.

Dr. Olney is a licensed psychotherapist and was an instructor at Bemidji State University and ICC. She is the author of the book, “The Medialization of Psychotherapy: Practicing Under the Influence”, which was published in 2016.

**Our AAUW Grand Rapids Board members will meet directly after the Jan. 16 program at the Methodist Church.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
November 28, 2016, United Methodist Church

Attendance: Marva Jean Hutchins, Cyndy Agle, Deanna Ensley, Cheryl Vogel, Karen Karls, Lynette Eck, Sharon Quern, Jo Ann Bakken, Nancy Raymond, Jan Miland, Jean Hoshal, Marilyn Rossman

We started the meeting by stating a highlight of our Thanksgiving celebration.

A discussion was held about the school board forum. It was suggested that we make it a regular practice every two years when there is an election. The next one would be in October, 2018 and should be in the program for the monthly meeting. If a bond issue comes up we would like to help with that.

Cyndy handed out the plans for the fundraiser. A planning discussion was held and everything seems to be in place. It was suggested that members that can’t attend make a donation to the scholarship fund if possible.

Karen moved, seconded by Cyndy, that we give each of the two caterers $25 as an appreciation Christmas gift. Passed.

The next board meeting will be Monday, January 16, directly after the monthly program at the United Methodist Church.

The new interest group met and will start activities in December or January.

Cheryl reported that she has talked to an insurance agent about liability insurance for board members. Marva Jean suggested that she contact the Community Foundation to see if we could be under their umbrella.

Karen moved, seconded by Jean, that the treasurer send $500 for each of the national funds. Passed. The legal aid and education scholarship funds are very important on the national level.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary
