FROM THE PRESIDENT – Lots of opportunities to connect, explore

Our January thaw is lingering longer than usual this year--very welcome to us all. It is so nice to be able to go outside without the cold "hurting my face"—a comment we heard a lot last year.

We had a great turnout for our January 19th meeting. Thirty-five of the brightest and best ladies in Grand Rapids were in attendance to hear Kristina Clark Gaalaas, an Edward Jones representative, talk about "Five Money Questions for Women". It served to remind us it is never too late to learn more about our personal finances. Only by being informed can we be prepared. It was wonderful at this meeting to welcome three new members - Helen Ahlbrecht, Edythe Hill and Margaret Barrick. See page 3 for more information on each.

On a very sad note, please remember Mae Howe who was a very active long-time member of AAUW and is now diagnosed with terminal cancer. She is staying in Grand Forks near her daughter. Her address is c/o Priccillo Marto, 2001 Oakwood, Grand Forks, ND 58201.

For the nominating committee report, our treasurer Cheryl Vogel has graciously agreed to continue in that position. Marilyn Rossman is willing to continue as Program Committee chair but needs a co-chair. Also if several members are willing to co-chair this committee, she will retire. Let me know before our February meeting.

I encourage you to support the Hibbing AAUW Branch by shopping their Used Book Sale on February 6, 7 & 8 at the Hibbing Armory, 2310 Brooklyn Dr. (across 169 from the Hibbing Community College). If you haven't seen this, it is unbelievable the amount of books they collect and sell to raise funds for scholarships.

Consider attending our AAUW Minnesota state convention on April 10-11 in Rochester. Hope to see you at our next meeting on February 16th at the Sawmill Inn for an 11:30 luncheon. Please make a reservation so the Sawmill Inn can be set up for an accurate count.

Keep Warm… Marj Lavalier

QUOTABLE

I'll tell you what scares me is plastic. Plastic bags, plastic bottles and these things. Why does my water have to be in a bloody plastic bottle? ... I'm just terrified of the proliferation of plastic.

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BRANCH MEETING
January 19, 2015, 11:30 AM, Sawmill Inn, Grand Rapids

Marj Lavalier welcomed all. Two guests were present and there are three new members. Kristina Gaalaas gave a well-prepared presentation on life organization and financial education. We wished there would have been time to hear more. Marilyn Rossman mentioned an article in the current AAUW Outlook magazine about adjunct professors.

Marj wished January birthday members a happy birthday. She also stated that the huge Hibbing used book sale will be February 6, 7 and 8 at the Hibbing Armory.  Marj also honored Martin Luther King Day and said that the AAUW State Convention will be on April 10-11. The board meeting is scheduled for January 26 at the Public Utilities Building.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary

AAUW GRAND RAPIDS BOARD MEETING
January 26, 2015, 4:00 PM, Public Utilities Building

Attendance: Marj Lavalier, Cyndy Agle, Karen Karls, Jean Hoshal, Cheryl Vogel, Jan Miland, Jan Hill, Marilyn Rossman, Nancy Raymond

The November minutes were approved. The treasurer’s report shows a balance of $7,762.00 in the checking account. There will be a finance committee meeting on March 9, 2015, 3:30 PM at the Public Utilities building.

There are three new members. The suggestion was made that there be an orientation for new members to help make them feel a part of the group and be informed of all the active groups within the organization.

The February meeting at Sawmill will be about fitness. It was also mentioned that Karen Karls’ newspaper articles about the meetings continue to be very well done and appreciated.

The next public policy meeting is the second Thursday of each month. The February meeting will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 4PM to watch the video, “Bag It”, about plastic.

The hospitality committee will provide nametags for the February meeting, but members may sit with whomever they choose. Nancy Raymond is planning to be there early at the February meeting to have something special for any new members that can attend.

The newsletter deadline is January 30th.

The food committee has changed the format for the February luncheon. One must pay at the door with cash or check, no credit cards. Also it will be one choice such as soup and salad.

Jean Hoshal shared information she received from the state scholarship person. There are five state funds local chapters may support. We have supported the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) and Educational Foundation (EF) programs.

The historian committee will update the scrapbook and have it at the February meeting for all to enjoy.

A suggestion was made that job descriptions should be handed down from year to year to new officeholders.

The website committee is working on updating it.

In old business it was decided that there should be a short presentation at each meeting from one of our interest groups. Karen Karls will give us information about the walking group at the February meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, Secretary
