SPEAKER: Bonnie Beier Stotts
SPEAKER: Bonnie Beier Stotts
Bonnie Beier Stotts will share her story
of growing up in the family business of Beier’s Greenhouse, started by her
parents Melvin and Lucy Beier in 1957. In 1977, Bonnie purchased the business that she now
runs with her husband Blake and their family.
Under Bonnie’s leadership, the business has expanded and includes
classes and special events. We’ll hear about the challenges and rewards of
running a seasonal business with a beautiful, but fragile inventory. As a bonus, we’ll get some planting tips and
a floral demonstration.
Need a RIDE?

monthly branch meetings, please call Deanna Ensley with your RSVP at 218-301-0315

Deanna will make arrangements with the members who have offered to provide
rides.

Report
The AAUW
annual membership dues need to be paid by June 30, 2017. You
can pay your dues at the May or June meetings, or mail a check to Cheryl Vogel
at 20401 Mishawaka Shores Drive, Grand Rapids, MN 55744.
To encourage timely dues payment, there will
be a drawing at the May meeting of names for all members who have paid their
dues. The winner will have their dues
payment reimbursed!
This year, the annual dues is $75. (National: $49, State: $9, Local: $17)
For those who have already paid $70, you can
pay the additional $5 at the May or June meetings. Or, you can mail your check to Cheryl Vogel
(refer to above address).
In April, we collected $110 from the Book Sale
and $26 from the Travel Treasures fundraiser.
NEW PROGRAM COMMITTEE
FOR 2017-2018
A
new Program Committee will be formed for the 2017-2018 program year, which begins
with the June meeting. If you would like to be part of the planning and help
with the monthly meetings, call Marilyn Rossman or Joann Bakken or Deanna
Ensley.
The
Program Committee Chair will be elected in May.
The new committee and chairs will be planning the summer programs. Anyone who would like the group to meet at
her home in June, July, or August, let Marilyn know. The information will be turned over to the
new chair.
We
also are asking for ideas and resources for our programs. A brief evaluation form will be available at
the April and May meetings for your use and we ask that all members help us
with ideas and information.

Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build project
Our AAUW Branch will
work with Habitat for Humanity on painting the exterior of a home for a woman
in Grand Rapids on May 10, Wed, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
You don't need to stay the whole time if you
can't, but it is important to start at the same time because we get an
orientation and sign in. If you don't think you can paint high up, don't
worry, there is always a way to help if you show up and are willing. It would
be good to show the community a great response from AAUW to let people know who
we are.
Sign up to volunteer for this Habitat Women’s
Build painting project through Marj at gloriestoast@gmail.com or call her at 326-2716. Thank
you for any support you can give!

Bakken or Marilyn Rossman with questions.

PUBLIC POLICY
The Public Policy Group meets the
second Thursday of the month, 4-5:30 PM in the KAXE Meeting Room (just east of
Grand Rapids Public Library) and all are welcome!
If you cannot always attend, no problem—join the group when you can. Our
purpose is to explore and learn about the issues behind public
policy—especially those that pertain to the AAUW mission of advancing equity
for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research AND
AAUW Public Policy supported legislation
For the May 11th meeting, 4 to 5:30
PM, you are asked to bring one issue from an article, book, movie or whatever
to discuss AND bring the article, book, etc., with you if possible to share
with others.
For
more information, talk with Marilyn Rossman or contact her at 326-6775 or mbro@paulbunyan.net or Jean Halverson at jehhmh@mchsi.com or 327-9158.
WALKING & TALKING
Currently, our group meets Tuesday afternoons at 1
PM. Location is planned week to week and
the group is notified by email. We welcome new walkers to join us whenever they
can. We walk for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and then have coffee. We generally walk in the Grand Rapids area
but have taken road trips to other parts of the county. Walkers of all levels
are welcome but know that the talking is a part of the experience so we are not
a race-walking group. If you want to be added to the group, send your email to k.karls@yahoo.com
When the weather warms up, certainly by
June 1, the walk time and day will switch to Wednesday morning at 9 AM. The day switch is to accommodate the members
that participate in Bone Builders.
AAUW
GRAND RAPIDS BRANCH MEETING
April 17, 2017 United Methodist Church
President Marva Jean Hutchens welcomed everyone to
the meeting. Nancy Raymond told about the five travel treasures available to
win with a dollar donation per name in the container.
Several guests were introduced.
Marilyn Rossman urged everyone to vote for the
national AAUW officers. There is information in the magazine that each member
receives. It includes candidate qualifications and how to vote online.
Karen Karls introduced the speakers. We were honored
to hear from the three women Itasca County Ninth Judicial judges. They are Lois
Lang, the senior judge, Korey Wahwassuck and Heidi Chandler, the newest
appointee. They gave interesting, humorous speeches and answered questions later.
Respectfully submitted, Jan Miland, secretary
