President’s Message
Dear Grand Rapids AAUW Branch Members,
The very best news is for our “president” officer
opening! Our Grand Rapids AAUW Branch has a new incoming president! Laurie
Clausen, who joined over a year ago, has volunteered to head our group. Below is
Laurie’s profile introduction from a year ago. Congratulations, Laurie, and thank
you so very much! We look forward to working with you.
Thank you to our nomination committee—Chair
Marj Lavalier and committee members Kathy Spencer and Jan Bilden!
April brings us the first of two annual book
sales to support our scholarships, which we hold at our regular monthly
meeting. Please bring new (5 years or so) books that you are interested in
donating for resale at the meeting on April 18th. Unsold books typically are
donated to the Grand Rapids Friends of the Library…BUT let’s aim to have none
left!
For our Grand Rapids AAUW branch meeting on April
18th you can bring a first-time, qualified guest for just $7.00! Come early to DONATE
books and SHOP to support our scholarship fund!
April is our “bring a first-time, qualified guest”
to the meeting for just $7.00. This is a popular event offe10red periodically and
usually attracts a member or two for our branch.
Our May end-of-the-year dinner will be at Forest
Lake and there will be more information about that at the April 18th meeting. I’m
looking forward to this annual festive occasion.
Cathy Davies has graciously agreed to host our
summer potluck at her home on Monday, August 22.
Thank you,
Deanna Ensley, Co-President

I am originally from Chisholm and lived about
five miles north of town for most of my life. I moved to Hibbing in 2014,
married my husband in 2017, and we are hoping to move closer to the Grand
Rapids area within the next three to five years so that I can be closer to my
office. I have three adult daughters, two living in Duluth and one in Chisholm.
I was introduced to AAUW by Lori Ridlon, who is a
member of the Hibbing branch.
I am a strong believer in supporting women; in
fact, my goal as a Financial Advisor for 2021 is to focus on women. My mission
is to give women a greater sense of confidence, to give them more encouragement
and support, and to empower them so they can make good financial decisions.
I began my career in the financial industry in
2004, earned my licenses in 2007, and went back to school in 2009, knowing that
Finance was the career for me, to earn my bachelor's degree in Business with a
focus in Finance. I have been with Edward Jones since 2012. My role has changed
over the years, leading me to my current and most enjoyed role of Financial
Advisor.
I currently volunteer for various organizations
in Grand Rapids, including United Way and the Chamber. I spent 14 years
volunteering for a local church in Chisholm, teaching religious education to
children of all ages.
ICC Summer Engineering Camp Supply Wish
List
Several scholarship opportunities exist to help
students attend ICC Summer Engineering camp. Scholarships are made possible
through generous donations from organizations (such as us/AAUW), individuals,
businesses, and schools. The sessions are in July. See the wish list of
supplies for this year’s summer camp (attached to this email). Note that CASH
donations are welcome too.
You are welcome to bring any of the requested supplies
to the Grand Rapids AAUW April 18th monthly meeting. For any questions, you may
contact Kim Damiani, ICC staff/camp director, at 218-322-2370. We will be able
to drop off supplies at Kim’s ICC office at 104 Backes Hall after our April
meeting.
Grand Rapids AAUW will offer scholarships to two
female students enrolled in an Itasca County School District. Selected
applicants will attend one camp session in summer 2022. Costs for attendance
range from $390 to $475.
This is a residential camp, so it provides a
fairly immersive engineering experience for the interested “Junior or Senior
High School Young Woman”.

AAUW Anniversary Scholarship recipient
From Kathleen Spencer, Scholarship Committee
Jamie Drewlow, from Nashwauk, is our 2022 AAUW Anniversary Scholarship recipient! She graduated from Deer River High School in 2007. Jamie’s plan is to attend Southwest Minnesota State University, where she has been accepted, and her major is Social Work with a future goal to pursue a master’s degree.

I recently moved to Grand Rapids from Northern Illinois, where I had always lived. There I attended Judson University, Elgin, IL, for my Bachelor’s degree in English, and went on to Rockford University, Rockford, Illinois, for a Master’s in English, and then to Northern Illinois University for a Master’s in Administration.
I began my teaching career as a middle school teacher of Language Arts/Math at Union Grade School, Union, IL. Later, I taught 7-8 Language Arts, Honors, and served as Dean of Students at Riley Grade School, Marengo, IL. for over 20 years.
After completing my Master’s in Administration, I became associate principal, then principal at Richmond Grade School, Richmond, IL, a K-5 building. After retirement, I also served several times for other short-term vacancies as a principal.
During my teaching/administrational career, I enjoyed traveling to many areas of the U.S., and also to Central America, the Panama Canal, The Netherlands, Germany, the Alps, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, and St. Petersburg. Every country was an adventure and eye-opening in experiences. Talking to people from these various areas of the world is so interesting and invigorating, so many similarities, and so many differences.
My daughter and family live in Richmond, Texas, (near Houston), and my son and family live here in Grand Rapids. I enjoy reading, sewing, playing golf, bike riding, and watching my six granddaughters grow up and become lovely, resourceful young women.
